Terms of service

The rules for using RegTail, in plain English. The free check is information to help you decide, not a guarantee. Paid credits, refunds and the API are explained below.

1. The service

RegTail is a used-car check for UK buyers. You give us a registration number, a link to an advert, or a photo of the car, and we build a report about that vehicle. The free check shows the vehicle and its current condition: the latest MOT result, its defects and advisories, the expiry, tax and recorded mileage. One credit unlocks the full report for that plate for 30 days, including the MOT history, mileage checks, the seller's claims tested against the records, and a guide for this car.

The report is built from public and licensed vehicle records, from data we hold ourselves (for example adverts we have seen and MOT statistics for the whole fleet), and from AI reading of adverts and photos. The per-car guide is AI-written advice drawn from those records.

The report is information to help you decide. It is not a guarantee about the car, not a mechanical inspection, and not financial or legal advice. Where we could not check something, the report says not checked: partial evidence is never presented as a clear result. Always view the car, drive it and see the paperwork before you pay for it.

By using RegTail you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. Your account

The free check needs no account. To buy credits, unlock a full report or use the API you sign in through our sign-in provider with Google, Apple or an email link. We never see or store a password.

You are responsible for what happens under your account. Keep your sign-in method secure and tell us at sunnier-larches25@icloud.com if you think someone else has used it.

3. Credits and payment

Paid features run on prepaid credits. The packs are:

  • 1 credit for £2.99
  • 5 credits for £9.99
  • 15 credits for £19.99

On the web, one credit unlocks one plate's full history for 30 days. Checking the same plate again inside those 30 days costs nothing. Through the API and MCP endpoint, each check costs one credit, every time, including a repeat of the same plate. Advice for the viewing is free for 30 days after a paid check of the same car, or while the plate is unlocked on your account on the web, and otherwise costs one credit. Checking your balance and decoding a plate are free. A check that fails after it was charged is refunded automatically. Sample keys (starting rt_test_) return sample data and cost nothing.

Payment is taken by our payment provider on its hosted checkout page. Card details go to the payment provider directly; we never see your card number. Prices are in pounds sterling, include VAT, and are shown before you pay. We may change prices for future purchases; that never changes credits you already hold.

Credits you buy do not expire. They belong to your account, cannot be transferred to another account, and have no cash value except as set out in section 4.

Voucher credits

We sometimes give free credits through an invite link or code. These voucher credits are free and work like bought credits, with these differences:

  • They expire at the end of the period shown when you claim them. Any left unused after that are gone.
  • They are used before your bought credits, the ones expiring soonest first.
  • They have no cash value, are not refundable and cannot be transferred or exchanged.
  • Each code can be claimed once per person, and only while it is open.
  • We may withdraw a code at any time, and take back unused credits from a code that was claimed by mistake or misused.

Bought credits are not affected by any of this: they still do not expire.

4. Cancellation and refunds

Credits are digital content that we add to your account the moment your payment is confirmed. There is no right to cancel a purchase. At checkout you agree that we supply your credits straight away and that you therefore lose the 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Credits are not refunded once bought, except as set out below.

If a paid unlock fails because a data source did not answer, the credit is returned to your account automatically and the report tells you so. If we fail to supply something you paid for and cannot put it right, we will refund you.

Nothing here affects your statutory rights, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for digital content that is faulty or not as described. If something has gone wrong, write to sunnier-larches25@icloud.com and we will look into it.

5. API keys

Signed-in users can create API keys from the account page. A key is shown once; we keep only a fingerprint of it, so we cannot show it to you again. If a key is lost or exposed, revoke it and create a new one.

  • Keep keys secret. Calls made with your key spend your credits and are your responsibility.
  • Rate limits apply to each key. Over the limit, calls are rejected without spending a credit.
  • Fair use. The API is for building products and tools that use our reports. Do not bulk-download, scrape or systematically copy our data, and do not resell or redistribute the raw data as a data feed.
  • We may suspend a key that is abused, shared or used in breach of these terms.

How to use the API and the MCP endpoint is set out at regtail.com/docs/agents, and the reference is at regtail.com/docs.

6. Acceptable use

Use RegTail to check vehicles you are considering, own, or are otherwise entitled to look into. You must not:

  • use the service to stalk, harass, track or identify a person, or for any unlawful purpose;
  • upload photos that you do not have the right to share, or that show people rather than a vehicle;
  • interfere with the service, probe its security, or try to get around credit, rate or access limits;
  • use automated tools against the website other than through the API with a valid key;
  • present our reports as your own or remove our name from them.

7. Accuracy and liability

We work from the records available to us and we show their source and date. Records can be late, incomplete or wrong, adverts can be misleading, and AI reading of text and photos can make mistakes. We do not promise that a report is complete or error-free, and a clean report does not mean the car has no problems.

We provide the service with reasonable care and skill. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss that was not foreseeable when you used the service, for business losses, or for your decision to buy or not to buy a vehicle. For paid features, our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be excluded or limited under English law. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

8. Our content

The RegTail name, design, software and the way we organise and present reports belong to us or our licensors. Public records remain subject to their own licences. You may share a report link with anyone and use a report for your own purchase decision; you may not copy the service or its data to build a competing one.

9. Changes and ending

We may change these terms when the service or the law changes. We will post the new version here with a new date, and for material changes we will tell signed-in users by email or on the site. If you keep using RegTail after the change, the new terms apply. If you do not accept them, stop using the service.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. You may close your account at any time by writing to sunnier-larches25@icloud.com.

10. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring a claim in your local courts. If you have a problem, please contact us first; most issues can be settled quickly by email.
